waiting for rain

Mountains surrounding Algiers

standing outside with my umbrella

i am waiting for the rain

i know those billowing clouds

i know the scent of this air

heralding a downpour

i know this season too well

i’ve come to know when the season needs rain

i eagerly await it

welcoming anticipation

nature’s emancipation

the rain must come

so i’m waiting

standing with my umbrella

my clumsy rainboots poised and strapped

the broken zipper zipped as high as it can stand

i am ready to count the raindrops

to become spotted like a cheetah

then to be drenched in a new hue

but then…

right beneath my nose

how could i have missed it?

a terrential downpour

a flooding event

an overwhelming rain of mercy

only known within
